AUTODROMO NAZIONALE DI MONZA
The Temple of Speed
The Autodromo Nazionale di Monza was built inside the royal park of Monza in just 110 days between May and July 1922, financed by the Automobile Club di Milano. Officially opened on 3 September 1922, it was the world's third purpose-built motor-racing circuit after Brooklands and Indianapolis, and remains the oldest in mainland Europe. The original layout combined a 4.5 km oval with a 5.5 km road course that could be run together as a 10 km super-track.
Known as the Tempio della Velocità, Monza has hosted the Italian Grand Prix almost every year since 1922 and has been a fixture of the Formula 1 World Championship since the series began in 1950. Giuseppe Farina won the inaugural F1 Drivers' title there in 1950; Peter Gethin's 1971 victory remains the closest finish in F1 history at 0.01 seconds, and Ferrari has won the Italian GP a record 20 times. In its 2022 centenary year, the circuit drew 337,000 fans across the race weekend.
