Steel Mill to Summer Stage

Carroponte sits inside the Parco Archeologico Industriale ex-Breda in Sesto San Giovanni, an industrial-heritage park inaugurated in 2006 on the site of the former Breda steelworks that, alongside the neighbouring Falck plants, made the town a powerhouse of 20th-century Italian heavy industry. The venue takes its name from the surviving overhead gantry crane structure built by Breda in the 1930s: a roughly 200-metre-long, 60-metre-wide and 20-metre-high steel framework that once carried bridge cranes moving scrap iron toward the foundries.

Since the late 2000s the preserved gantry has been repurposed as one of northern Italy's most distinctive open-air concert venues, with a capacity of up to 9,570 spectators (around 3,000 seated) under the raw steel canopy. Each summer Carroponte hosts a packed programme of rock, indie, electronic and world-music concerts, festivals and cultural events — Patti Smith, Massive Attack, Public Enemy and Manu Chao have all played here.
