From Slaughterhouse to Cultural Hub

The Ex Macello on Viale Molise was Milan's municipal slaughterhouse, designed in the early 1900s by engineer Giovanni Filippini and inaugurated after construction began in 1914. For most of the twentieth century it served as the city's central abattoir and meat wholesale market, occupying a large industrial enclave on the eastern edge of the historic centre between Porta Vittoria and Calvairate.

Slaughtering wound down by 2007 and the wholesale market closed on 31 December 2012. The site is now the focus of the ARIA urban regeneration project — winner of the second Reinventing Cities competition — converting the buildings into housing, IED university spaces and culture. In the meantime the Corte has been reactivated for concerts, DJ sets, art happenings and Fuorisalone events.
