Opened on 17 May 1953 as the centrepiece of the Foro Italico sports complex on the banks of the Tiber, the Stadio Olimpico is Rome's principal stadium and one of the busiest venues in Italian sport. It staged the 1960 Olympic Games and was rebuilt almost entirely for the 1990 World Cup, when a translucent roof was added over the stands. Today it holds 72,698 spectators.

Few grounds in Europe carry a double life like this one: AS Roma and SS Lazio both play their home fixtures here, the Italian national rugby team contests its Six Nations matches on the same turf, and in summer the pitch becomes one of Italy's major concert stages.

Stands and sectors

The bowl is organised into two long side stands — the Tribuna Monte Mario, on the side of the dressing rooms and press areas, and the Tribuna Tevere opposite — and two ends, the Curva Nord and Curva Sud. Four corner sections known as the Distinti connect the curves to the tribunes. Roma supporters traditionally occupy the Curva Sud, Lazio fans the Curva Nord.

Getting there

The simplest route by public transport is metro line A to Flaminio, then tram 2 to its terminus at Piazzale Mancini; from there the stadium is a short walk across the Tiber. Allow extra time on match days, when the surrounding Foro Italico area is closed to traffic and entry checks are in place.
