Alcatraz Milano occupies a 1946 industrial building on Via Valtellina — originally a mechanical workshop, later a shipping warehouse. Between 1997 and 1998 the structure was radically converted into a multifunctional space of over 3,000 square metres, opening in 1998 as one of northern Milan's largest live-music and club venues. The club was founded by Enrico Rovelli, the long-time manager of Italian rock icon Vasco Rossi.

Rovelli used his experience in the Italian rock circuit to position Alcatraz as a key Milanese stage for both Italian and international acts. The venue blends concerts, club nights, fashion shows and corporate events under a single roof, and Vasco Rossi himself has performed memorable shows there, including an acoustic set in April 1999. Its industrial-revival look and roughly 3,000-capacity main floor have made it a fixture of Milan's nightlife.
